Mark Rothko's catalogue raisonne shows a slow decline into his death at his own hand, opening the crook of his elbows in 1971. Rothko had no desire for money, and less for fame, and his late works, battleship grey, evacuated of the reds, oranges, and yellows of his peak in the early 1960s, were a sign post of the colour leaving his life.
